Purchase visitor health insurance for all foreign visitors whom you host. If visitors fall sick or injure themselves then the insurance coverage can protect the host family from big bills. Coverage can be purchased from the day one departs the home country till the day one returns home (including the the days in transit).

Once you have purchased the coverage make sure you receive the insurance cards and proof of coverage. They are emailed immediately upon purchase of the plan. Visitors can carry the cards with them at all times.

Ascertain if the insurance follows a preferred network of providers. Insurance companies typically offer the most benefits if you visit providers from within the network. So, use a physician and hospital within the network wherever you travel.

The insurance card will provide an Assist number to contact in case you need any information regarding benefits and eligibility. Procedures stipulated by the insurance company must be followed when you seek treatment. Certain treatments may require precertification before the procedure.

If there is a life threatening emergency you must call 911 for assistance. In other cases it is best to make an appointment with a physician. If you need help outside of normal business hours, you must go to an Urgent Care Center. Do not go to the Emergency Room if it is not an emergency. Most plans will not cover ER visits if the visit does not lead to hospitalization or is not of an emergency nature.

The medical provider determines whether to bill the insurance company directly or bill the insured. If the insured has made a payment then the insured can fill out a claim form, include itemized receipts and seek reimbursement for the payments made. The insurance company may request additional information and the entire reimbursement process can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks.

It is obvious that you are aware of the reason for which you are heading your way to the country. So you should also know the plan which serves your purpose to the fullest. If you are visiting the country to spend your vacations, you will have to buy the travel/trip insurance plans. These plans are designed for the short-term visits to a country and cover almost any kind of risk or loss during the time of travel. On the contrary, if you are moving to a country for higher studies, the insurance policy will be extended for a long period. These plans will cover a different set of risk factors.

Keep a clear head while looking and remember what type of trip you are taking. By doing this you can look at the brochures that most insurance companies have and find the insurance policy that will meet your needs for the type of travel you are doing.

After all, you should know about the insurance companies by which you are getting your visit insured. There are many factors that affect the quality of plans you are going to purchase. Therefore you have to pay extra attention to the insurance company as well.

Take a little time to check out the reviews for the company on the internet. Another way is to get recommendations from friends or coworkers who have traveled and used insurance. Check out the availability of services also. Will you be able to get the the help you need should you require the services covered by your policy?

Ratings companies are a good place to go to find out more about the company you want to buy an insurance from. A company like A M Best Ratings can help you there. These are independent companies who can give you an impartial assessment of the quality of service that this company has provided.

Finally, the best you can do to insure a good travel experience is to know the insurance policy and know the company that is selling it to you. For the greatest confidence look for a reputable insurance company.

Visitor Medical Insurance plans are available for visitors who visit the US. There are several plans one can choose from. You cannot compare two plans solely on cost; there are different features in visitor health insurance plans that make each plan different. You must understand the plan details before you purchase a plan.

1. Comprehensive plans and Fixed Benefit plans: There is a big difference in how the benefits are paid between both these plans. The prices also vary widely. Fixed benefit plans guarantee a certain amount for each eligible expense. This amount may not cover the actual expense. The insured will pay the difference between the amount paid by the insurance and the actual expense. Comprehensive plans have less uncertainty built into them. They provide coverage up to the maximum plan limit for covered expenses. Apart from the usual deductible and co insurance the insured will not have to pay anything extra.

2. Co insurance: Co insurance can be defined as a preset proportional sharing of expenses between the insured and the insurance company. Plans have different co insurance percentages. Some may require little or no co insurance and some may require a high proportional payment. For example in a 70/30 co insurance rate plan, the insured must pay 30% of the eligible expenses and the insurance company pays 70%.

3. Deductible: It is the amount that must be paid by the insured before the insurance company pays for any covered service. Once the deductible is met the insurance will cover eligible expenses. The higher the deductible, lower the premium.

4. Coverage for pre existing conditions: Pre existing conditions are usually not covered by visitor medical insurance plans. Pre existing conditions are defined differently by each insurance company. For the plan you are looking to purchase make sure you understand how they are defined. In some cases the definition includes only those medical conditions that the insured was aware of prior to the start of the plan and was receiving treatment or medication. Some other plans may have a broader classification to include all conditions that manifested prior to the start of the plan even if the insured was not aware of their existence.

5. Plan Limit: The price of a plan also depends on the maximum amount the plan will pay for all claims for the insured. A plan that offers maximum 50K coverage will be cheaper than one that offers 100K coverage. Some plans may offer per incident/per injury maximum and some offer a maximum coverage for the entire policy period.

Talk to your visitor travel health insurance specialist for more tips and advice on selecting the right plan for you. Compare prices for plans that offer the same level of benefits. Do not end up without health insurance.
