The Fascinating Story of the Guinea Pig

Many a time when you visit with a friend or relative one of their children will drag you out to see their pet guinea pig, but have you ever stopped and asked yourself what you know about these delightful pets?

And delightful they are, for guinea pigs make great pets, but they were not always a domestic animal, so just where do they originate from, and where did they get that name from, because, lets face it, its a rather odd name.

Well let me shock you by firstly saying that they are actually rodents, and are technically known as Cavies, but don’t let all this put you off, please read on.

These delightful animals have been around for millions of years, and we know this because of fossilised remains that have been uncovered and it is only relatively recently that they have become a family pet.

Now for something else to surprise you, they used to be much larger than they are today, averaging around 9 feet long. That’s a sizeable pet.

Now where do they come from? Well they originated in South America, and were first domesticated by the Incas. They were both a religious Icon, and sadly a source of food, and this is still the case even today in parts of Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador.

Ever thought a rodent would be considered to have healing powers? Well in some parts of Peru they believe this and they think that the guinea pig can aid the transition from this life to the next. Now that is quite something!

These lovely creatures came to Europe and America courtesy of the sailors who brought them to sell for, guess what, a guinea, and that is where part of their name came from.

The second part of their name, pig, comes from their likeness, at the rear end, to pigs, and also to the fact that they tend to squeal a bit like pigs.

They have also been used quite a bit over the years in the field of research, and you have probably heard and used the expression “we are using him as a guinea pig”

Medical science has benefited greatly from the use of guinea pigs in their laboratories but of course although they have saved many a human life, the cost in the lives of the guinea pigs has been high.

Even today they are still used for research but in a more humane way which we are told does not cause any distress to the animal.

Today in Peru, guinea pigs still play a prominent role in various ceremonies, and quite often a person will give one as a present when they are trying to impress.

You may be surprised to learn that a rodent could be so well loved, but a recent survey placed guinea pigs just behind dogs, cats and rabbits in the popular pet league.

So, next time your friends children drag you out to look at their pet guinea pig you will understand a little more about the attraction of these animals.

Organic vegetable gardening is gaining popularity these days. The main reason behind this is is people are more health conscious and are paying more attention to the food they consume. Also, in some places where food is not widely available, people have decided to plant their own vegtables. In this article you will find some useful advice on organic vegetable gardening.

Organic vegetable gardening does not use fertilizers and chemicals which can be harmful to humans. It also does not use genetic engineering or irradiation. Instead, it uses simple farming techniques like tilling the land, giving it enough water and sufficient exposure from the sun.

When harvesting is finished, something new is planted which is better known as crop rotation that helps keep the soil fertile. Growing organic vegetables is not something that only farmers can do. This can be done by homeowners since they can plan some of these in their own backyard. The first thing that you have to do is choose what kind of vegetables you want to grow. You also have to understand how big these can grow so it will be easy to plot how many can be placed per row.

The next step would be to determine the condition of the soil. There are soil fertility kits that you can purchase from any hardware or gardening store to determine this. Once you have determined that the soil is good and fertile enough you have to clear it of rocks and weeds. By adding some compost and greensand to the soil you can supply it with nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous. If you need to adjust the soil’s pH level you can add some lime or sulphur. Do this only if you really have to.

When using organic matter, it is recommended that you till or dig in the fertilizers. Ensure that you have at least an inch of sharp sand if the soil you use is made of clay before you rake the soil into rows or beds. For best results, you should leave the soil for a month before planting.

Do not forget to use an organic mulch to blanker the garden. For this you can use ground bark since it will decompose over a month or two. Besides that, you can use a compost file made out of recycled leaves, grass clippings and kitchen waste as they all serve as a good natural fertilizer.

The organic vegetable garden will grow but it will be always under threat from weeds and insects. For that, you have to use other animals and insects to fight these pests. You don’t have to buy them because setting the ideal conditions will invite them in to your home.

As for the weeds, you can get rid of them by pulling them out or spraying home made vinegar as this stops them growing. If you plant thickly enough, you will be able to discourage weeds from growing in between the plants.

Planting your own organic vegetable garden isn’t that bad given that the only ones who will be consuming what is planted are those that live in the household. But it’s going to be a bed of roses from the time you till the land to the time that they will be harvested.

If you’re going to get started growing your own food, the first thing you’ll need is organic gardening supplies. Choosing to grow your plants organically is a great idea. It gives you the satisfaction of knowing you did it yourself, and you have control over the entire process, meaning you know your food is healthy. With the right preparations, it’s easy to get started on your own organic garden, whether indoors or out.

To prepare the garden for planting, a shovel, spade and spading fork are invaluable. A hoe is useful to remove the weeds in your new garden bed or to remove rocks. A scuffle hoe has a blade that points forward and cuts the weeds off at the surface.

A pry bar can be used to dig up the large rocks or boulders that can be a problem in your garden. A garden always can use a good pruning. To keep those healthy flowers on your rose bushes, a periodic pruning with good quality shears is a must. Lopping shears will also make a clean cut on those prickly rose stems to ward off disease.

These are the commonplace supplies of a gardener. An organic gardener may have a few other supplies as well. A normal gardener may choose to use fertilizers that have added chemicals but the organic gardener tends to use natural things such as bat guano or worm castings.

You will need a couple of applications per month of organic fertilizers. When a worm moves through the soil it creates a tunnel and this is called a worm casting. It adds nutrients to the soil and breaks it up as well. These fertilizers are a vital part of organic gardening as they will make your plants healthier and grow better.

Bedroom(s): Changing out the bedroom linens is the most impactful change you can make. By keeping your color scheme on the walls and your accessories neutral, it helps the keep the bed itself a blank canvas to work with. If you happen to have a lot of accessories in the bedroom, try to break them into sets and put some away for a while - then pull them out in a few months and do a switch-a-roo! You’ll feel like you have a new room every time!

Kitchen: One way to enliven your kitchen area is to change out your color scheme with items as simple as your hand towels, window coverings, table settings and any accessories you might have. A more permanent way to really add a new life to your kitchen is to add a colorful backsplash in solid tile or mosaics. Amazing Popularity of the Confederate Flag

by Robert Cooksey

The Confederate battle flag is the flag we’re most likely to recognize. It’s also called the Southern Cross by some, and carries strong associations - both positive and negative. For some, it’s an emblem of southern heritage and a source of a lot of pride. For others, it’s a reminder of segregation, slavery, blue laws, and a symbol of institutionalized racism. Adding fuel to the fire is the fact that many hate groups use the Confederate battle flag as a symbol - more than five hundred extremist groups do so, according to one source.

While many people believe that the battle flag was the national flag of the Confederacy, that’s not true. This flag was just one of more than a hundred and eighty different battle flags used in different areas over the course of the war. Some of them looked like the familiar red, white and blue cross. Others looked very different. Even the national flag went through changes - there were three different official Confederate flags during the course of the war.

Display of the Confederate flag is a big deal for lots of people, because almost no one can agree on exactly what it stands for. While this flag acts as a symbols of the south’s racist heritage for some, it’s a sign of pride for many others. There are even some groups, mostly outside the US, who’ve used the Confederate flag to signify a general sense of rebellion, completely outside its historical context.

This is why displaying the Confederate flag, whether it’s on a public building, at a sporting event, or part of a state flag, is such a big deal. This flag means a lot to people, and some will feel that it’s a direct attack. Legislatures in the south have been struggling with this sticky problem for almost two decades now.

Many of these states still display the Confederate flag in particular locations or on certain occasions. It’s important to remember that just putting up the Confederate flag doesn’t mean a person is making a racist statement. The issue is a lot more complicated than that.

The Confederate flag is a proud symbol of the south. However, the fact that it’s used by the Klan and other extreme racist organizations mean that it’ll automatically have some other associations. If you want to display this flag, think about the implications, and be willing to explain calmly what it means to you.

The flag is a big symbol of pride in the south. However, the fact that the Ku Klux Klan and similar groups have used it as their own symbol means that there can’t help but be other associations. Display your Confederate flag carefully, and be willing to explain calmly what it means to you.

This flag is a popular symbol of southern pride, but its adoption by the Ku Klux Klan and other racist organizations means that it has some other associations, too. That means you should display it carefully, and be ready to calmly explain what the Confederate flag means to you.

How To Install Your Blinds

by Maria Castronuevo

Now that you have considered getting blinds for your home, do not be daunted by the purchase or installation process. Everything will be just fine as long as you take the right measurements and are handy with a hammer and screwdriver.

Installing blinds is pretty simple and straightforward, without any complicated steps involved. It does not matter whether you are male or female, or what age you is.

The first step, even before making a purchase, is to take measurements of the window where the blinds will be installed. You will require these measurements for the proper fit when it comes to the height and width of the blind. If your calculations are incorrect, you could end up with a blind that is either too wide or too long. Once you have all of your measurements, then it is time to purchase your brand new blinds.

The installation process is the next step now that the blinds are home.

First get a pencil. While holding your blinds in the spot where you want them to hang, mark the wall with the pencil on both sides of the blinds because this is where the brackets will go. Having done this will ensure that your brackets will be installed perfectly and the blinds will at the right height. Time to go get your hammer and screwdriver.

Take both brackets for your blinds and attach both of them to the wall where you made the marks, one bracket per mark. These usually attach with small screws, normally three or four to a bracket. If the screws do not want to go into the wall easily, simply tap them gently once or twice with the hammer to start them, and then continue with the screwdriver. Make sure to line the brackets up precisely with the marks on the wall during the installation, so that they are far enough apart to hold the blinds. It is very important that the open side of the bracket is facing the front so that the blinds can slide into it.

Once you have installed the brackets, it is time to install the blinds into the brackets. The blinds should slide easily into the open ends of the brackets, so that they are held in place. Once this is done, use the small piece and slide it into the open side of the brackets, locking the blinds in place and improving the looks of them.

Now simply stand back and admire your beautiful new blinds, installed perfectly by you without any professional help.

by Carlee Evie

When it comes to today’s job market, competition is fierce. You want to be seen as one of the best, and you want a powerful resume. Although there are tons of resume styles to choose from, it’s vital that you choose only the right one.

You may be wondering why there even has to be so many styles. Well, for starters, resumes aren’t just presented as physical documents any more. There’s a growing trend for people to view documents like resumes on the computer. A style that works splendidly as a printed document just will not work as well when sent through email or fax. So, this has naturally led to more styles for each medium.

The particular position that you are applying for may also require a very specific resume style, and you should be prepared to adapt your present resume to best display your skills according to the situation at hand. This after all is what the main purpose of a resume is: to show off your capabilities.

By far, the most widespread form of resume writing is the chronological style, which as the name implies lists all of the positions that you have worked in starting with the most current.

A newer resume style-the functional style-has been increasingly more popular recently. This method involves listing your most significant accomplishments first, with lesser accomplishments following. This will allow any would-be employer to quickly skim through your qualifications and determine if you are right for the job. At the same time, this form also allows you to play up your strengths.

You’ll find a few other resume styles as well, but most of them are just variations of the chronological and functional resumes. By the way, don’t shy away from experimenting with different combinations of resume styles to suit your needs. The whole idea behind the resume is to communicate your abilities in the clearest way possible, and choosing the best resume style gives you the freedom to do that.

Work At Home Scams: Want To Know The Truth?

Date: Friday July 25, 2008
Posted in: Home & Garden

by David Gates

Have you thought about starting a stay-at-home business so that you can make money and still stay home with your children? Although there are great opportunities and amazing stories of success, many scams and fraudulent claims also exist. This article will give you some factors to consider before embarking on a home-based business.

If a business opportunity sounds too good to be true, it more than likely is. These scams have caused even highly intelligent people to lose money and time. If a website promises that their method requires little work and great money quickly, it is most likely a scam.

<br/Be wary of companies wanting money. Of course, some legitimate companies want a fee from you to receive their start-up package, but personally I am very leery of any company who wants you to pay them money on a regular basis in order to work for them. When I started maintaining a website for one company as an independent contractor, not an employee, I was initially impressed with the fact that all that I was investing initially was my time. If that company had never paid me anything, then I would have been out the time, but NO money!

Other popular home-based business scams are the stuffing envelopes or home assembly programs. Both of these schemes have been around for many years, yet they still rear their ugly head in legitimate sources like newspapers and magazines. Although some people may have actually been paid for stuffing envelopes, I have known people who tried to earn some money in this manner. They paid the required fee and followed the directions given, only to be told their work was not up to the companys standards.

Remember that if something sounds too amazing to be the truth, it is probably a scam. In most cases, you must send in money to pay for supplies, put the product together, and then send the assembled product to the company. The usual claim by the company is that the product was not put together correctly, so you will not be paid. Since they are the ones who judge the quality of the production, you have no say in the outcome and, ultimately, no recourse either.

Outlandish claims on a Home Based Business site claiming you will make thousands of dollars in a short time period working from home are sure signs of a scam. Can this be reality? Unfortunately, it just isnt possible. It is possible to make money with a home based business due to a large internet audience, but you must heavily research these possibilities before jumping headfirst into a scam.

Watch out when the very first line in a Home Based Business website states you can make thousands of dollars a week working from home. Is this realistically possible? Not likely. Yes, the Internet does provide unique opportunities for you, especially in marketing to a very large audience, but be very careful and do your research before jumping in to any of these \”unique opportunities.\” Some of these really do work, especially in the Internet Marketing area. I’ve done them myself, and had some reasonable success. But just realize that most websites like this are simply designed to take your money. They hire people who are very convincing copy-writers. They know how to use words, pictures, graphs, etc. to convince you of pretty much anything.

One question to ask when considering a home based business is: can the company provide proof of their claims? The ad sounds great, albeit unclear, but the money you will make is fabulous! Read everything, including the fine print, and you will probably find a run of the mill scam. Investigate the company well. You can make money from a home based business, but finding a legitimate one is like finding a needle in a haystack.

Combining Decorating and Feng Shui

by Kyle Richey

If you’re thinking about remodeling your home, you might be interested in knowing about the way that decorating and feng shui can be combined. If you want, you can even introduce some of the principles of feng shui into your home and reap the benefits.

Actually, feng shui and decorating are a blend of both art and science. There are no hard and fast rules about applying feng shui to your life. There are a lot of experts who can advise you but it will be up to you to make the final decisions about what you do and don’t like. A true feng shui guide will never tell you that you have to paint this room that color or put this object there. They can advise and give you tips but the end result should be something you feel totally comfortable and happy with.

This is the part of decorating and feng shui that might be considered art. Because there aren’t any real correct or incorrect answers, just about everything is subjective. What works for one person may be problematic for another.

There is plenty of advice when it comes to using color to create tension, energy and mood and also when it comes to de-cluttering your living space, but there are no set rules about this either. One person might view their ornaments as prized possessions and feel happy every time they look at them. To another person, these items might be considered unnecessary dust collectors and serve no other function apart from being in the way.

When applying the principles of decorating and feng shui, you need to exercise caution and show balance. What someone else sees as a lack of clutter, you might see as being cold and sterile, and vice versa. Again, no hard and fast rules, no right and wrong answers, just some principles that you need to interpret for yourself.

Decorating and feng shui is also part science, however. There are some real, biological facts behind its teachings regarding clutter, color, entryways, and so on. Scientists have researched how tense and anxious people feel when surrounded by a cluttered environment, and how color can and does affect ones mood. Bold and bright colors are a great pick me up, while warmer colors make you feel soothed and relaxed. Softer colors can also be a calming influence, while those bold colors make you feel energized and in control.

Likewise, the entrance to your home and to each room in the house can do a lot to set the mood of the space. Your entry way is how you make your first impression. Like a first meeting with a person, the first impression of your entry way can set the tone of how you interact with the room.

When applying the principles of decorating and feng shui, its important to think about that first impression you get when you walk up to your home or when you walk into a room. It helps to sometimes stand right in the entryway of your home or of each room and do a quick, honest evaluation. What is your impression of the atmosphere? How do you immediately feel? Does your home and each room therein feel warm and inviting, or are you somewhat put off, so to speak?

By applying these basic principles of decorating and feng shui, you can begin to experience both the art and science of this ancient practice.
