Let us first take a look at some information about Canadian Geese scientifically known as Branta Canadensis to give us a better understanding of them so that we can really understand the ins and outs of hunting geese in Colorado. A lot of people believe that the goose is the most recognizable and most common waterfowl species in North America.

Male and female geese look identical to one another but the male goose or gander is typically bigger and big or large geese are considered honkers or greater to the smaller lesser or cackler geese. Canadian geese are easily identified by their long black necks and a patch of white on each cheek and under their chins on their black heads. They also have a grayish black body, grayish brown and white bellies with white under their tails, very large wings and weigh about 6 to 20 pounds. While Colorado goose hunting this year we ended up shooting some huge geese that made our hands look small in comparison to their large heads.

You can always find geese in close proximity to water sources like reservoirs, lakes, ponds, gravel pits, streams, rivers and marshes. You will also find them in all our mad made areas like on the golf course, city parks, near airports and most likely in your back yard too. Prior to migration, geese will feed heavily and on most occurrences will spend about 12 hours each day feeding, they are also herbivores. They have teeth on the outsides of their bills called lamellae that they use to help them in cutting and tearing your bluegrass yard. Grass is of high preference for geese but they will eat pretty much all of Colorado’s agriculture that is easily presented and they can eat around a pound a day. They have also been spotted putting down small fish and crustaceans with a normal diet consisting of grass, corn, wheat, aquatic plants, grains, beans, rice, berries and not to forget all the crackers and bread they put down those long necks at the local parks.

The nesting areas will have good visibility to impending dangers most of the time being next to open water and the geese will return to the same nesting area every year. Geese will have lifelong mates being monogamous but if one mate dies they can find another and sometimes they will remain single. Spring time is when mating begins and for the most part a goose will not mate before they are 2 years old. Females get choice of nesting location and will build the nest with grasses, leafs and vegetation that is surrounding and the male will defend the nest, eggs and territory. The eggs will be incubated by the female who will use her feather down on her chest to insulate and line the nest. There is an average of about 5 to 7 eggs in every nest and together they are called a clutch. It takes about a month to fully incubate the clutch, each egg takes around a day to be laid and the incubation will not be started until the complete clutch is laid.

A goose’s babies are called goslings and it takes them 1 to 2 days to break themselves free of the egg with an egg tooth located on top of their bills. The clutch or all eggs will hatch in about 1 day and all goslings will go into the water within 24 hours of hatching. When mating and nesting is complete, adult geese will go into a molting phase each year where they shed their outer wing feathers. In this phase adult geese will remain flightless and the water will provide a necessary means for escaping danger. When the goslings are ready to fly at 9 weeks of age the adults will have grown their outer wing feathers back.

During nesting the geese can be quite aggressive and protective and it is possible to catch this behavior on those funny videos where people get attacked when they get a little too close. It is easy to see that a goose might not be too happy when they start hissing and using their large wings as flapping weapons of mass feathering. Use of body movement is a large means of communication for the goose and it is very noticeable when they are spotted in parks and on the water where they chase and push each other around. They can make around thirteen different calls ranging from warning and contentment calls to very loud alarm and greeting calls to fast clucks and murmurs of geese that are feeding. Overall geese are extremely family orientated, gregarious animals and may also be some of the chattiest animals after us loud mouth humans, of course.

We have all seen the massive diagonal lines and v formations geese tend to fly in and the logical reasoning behind such unity would have to be aerodynamics hard at work. Geese are most likely flying like this in their long migration paths to help reduce the drag off one another so that those long trips are possible using the least amount of energy. The migration is a learned process and can average two to three thousand miles in flight range. During migration geese can be found throughout all the states, Canada and Mexico, at one time or another. They will spend the summers in the northern parts of North American, especially in Canada and will migrate south in the winter months. There are at least twelve subspecies Canadian geese, of which seven have been recognized to some extent, and they can also be found naturally in Northern Europe, Eastern Siberia, Eastern China and also in Japan. They have been introduced in many other countries as well throughout history.

Phrygian Mode is played by taking the notes of a particular key and, when playing your solo, making the first note as well as the final note played the third note of that key’s scale. In other words, if you wanted to play a solo in the Phrygian Mode while performing a song in the key of D, you would begin and end your solo with the F note. The F note that you start and end with may be in two different octaves. What matters is that it’s F.

When you become more highly developed with your guitar playing, you’ll be able to play solos based upon the Phrygian Scale’s intervals. Understanding these intervals gives you a more profound understanding of the notes that actually construct the Phrygian Mode. This enables you to become yet more creative.

The Phrygian Mode intervals go: Root, flatted 2nd , flatted 3rd ,4th ,5th , flatted 6th , flatted 7th . So to play E Phrygian, you would use: E-F-G-A-B-C-D-E’. Notice that E Phrygian Mode is really in the key of C. So you are really playing the C major scale, but you are emphasizing the individual notes in a different than “straight” way.

If you want an exotic sound that often gets called “Arabian” or “Persian” when you solo, the Phrygian Mode is a perfect choice for you. The many flatted notes of this mode lend themselves to creating such an exotic sound and feel.

Since the intervals comprising the Phrygian Mode necessitate including several flatted notes, this mode does indeed sound mystical. It can also sound very dark, as if a wizard is conjuring up some wicked demons. If you are into complex rock music, this is a mode that you definitely want to know about. It also sounds amazing when played on an acoustic or classical guitar.

As you learn guitar scales it is important to learn the modes of the major scale. A good starting point is the Ionian mode also referred to as the major scale. The intervals of the major scale produce a happy and bright feel. This is primarily due to the major 3rd but also how the other notes sound allong side the root note. The major scale will give a good starting or reference point to other scales, due to its neutral, easy sounding intervals. If we take the major scale we can construct triads from each of the notes, creating 3 major, 3 minor and a diminished chord. A typical major progression will only use the major triads from the root, fourth and fifth notes of the scale. These three chords are often the easiest to solo over.

Despite this scale scale being associated with these genres of music it also works very well with lead guitar. So, if this mode gets played in the key of C, the notes, in order, are: G, A, B, C, D, E, and F. As you may know already, if this were actually the G major scale, then the F would be sharpened. Therefore, by playing the C major scale emphasising the G you are thus actually playing the Mixolydian Mode, which will give a very different sonic feel to the music, by way of flattening the seventh interval.

The term “key” describes the central note or tonic centre around which a piece of music is based. The mixolydian mode can be effectively played over the G major chords in the key of C or its relative minor : A minor. The mode can also be played where G is the tonic centre or key in itself.

The Mixolydian Mode is applied to many different styles or genres of music. This mode is often used in rock music to give a solo a melodic, powerful, and bright feel.
