When comparing TVs for the purpose of selecting a new television for your home, there is a lot more to look at than just the price for the set. You need to decide on the price and the brightness rating. You should consider the size of the set and who the manufacturer is. The resolution is a critical feature as is the contrast radio and connectivity.

A generation ago, a resolution rate of 720 pixels was top of the line. Today, a set with a resolution of 1080 pixels is more common, at least with high definition televisions. The sets with higher resolution rates work with other HD devices such as blu-ray DVDs

Television size is usually measured diagonally. The cost of a television is higher for larger screens. Choose the television size based on the average viewing distance from the screen. If you normally sit within 3 yards of a television, a fifty inch screen works well if the resolution is 720 pixels. With higher resolution, a larger television works even better.

A television that uses LCD technology needs a contrast ratio that is a minimum of 5000:1. This means the whitest white pixels are much brighter than the darkest black pixels. In a set sized larger than 42 inches, you will need a higher contrast ratio in order to have good viewing experiences. Low contrasts means that the whites are dull and the blacks appear gray.

Most people use their television sets to connect to other things as well. Connecting to HD devices and to a laptop means you need HDMI or DVI connections and a VGA connection respectively. You will also allow for standard AV input.

The brightness level of your television set is another feature to compare when preparing to purchase. A level rated at less than 550 cd/m2 is likely to fade out when you try to watch it in a bright room. The rating will be less important if you always watch the images in a darkened room.

The manufacturers of TVs that you are comparing will be important too. Internet review of various sets and manufacturers will give you information about plus and minus features in many different sets. Whether you choose LCD, LED or plasma televisions, go for the most features for the lowest price.
