“Man boobs” is a condition where there is an enlargement in a male’s breast. A male with man boobs has a lump beneath his nipple. There is a high probability that the condition will occur in both of his breasts. Oftentimes, the breasts enlarge unevenly.
Scientifically, man boobs is called Gynecosmastia. It is common in males during their teenage years where there is a physical change happening in the body. Studies show that at least one third of male population will develop this condition. In due time, Gynecosmastia will gradually vanish. In some instances, the symptoms will stay.
During the whole lifespan of a man, he is prone to Gynecosmastia at most three times. Immediately after a baby boy is born, he is prone to developing breasts due to milk flow. After a couple of months, symptoms of Gynecosmastia will slowly vanish naturally. In rare condition, the symptoms would last for up to 24 months.
Once he reached puberty, he will again be susceptible to breast enlargement due to testosterone imbalance in his body. The level of his testosterone is fluctuating as he undergoes different stages of puberty. If the production of testosterone in his body is greater than that of estrogen, the signs of Gynecosmastia will vanish. Unfortunately, there is also a chance that the condition won’t change.
The last one is during adult years. Adult males, ages 50 and above are also susceptible to Gynecosmastia. Usually, the causes of this condition in adult males are: obesity, drugs, diets and sometimes health problems.
In most cases, males develop man boobs due to excessive body fat. Gynecosmatia in obese men is so common that people learn to ignore it. If these men lose weight, it is most likely that the condition will diminish. This just means that their male boobs were the results of excessive fats in the breasts.
Regrettably, there are instances that the condition cannot be removed by losing weight. In this case, the breast enlargement was due to excess fat and glandular tissue. With too much glandular tissue, simple exercise might not help in removing Gynecosmastia. The best option is having a cosmetic surgery.
Though you shouldn’t worry about your health with Gynecosmastia, its psychological impacts must not be overlooked. For you, this might lower your ego and self-esteem. In cases that it already causes disturbance in your lifestyle, you should treat it as soon as possible.
